Taking steps to protect the planet and the delicate ecosystems which its comprised of is something everyone should take part in; not because someone told us we have to, but because we enjoy sitting in parks with fresh air or venturing on long distance backpacking trips among the trees, or spending our weekends at the lake.
If you think about it, there’s something about nature that each of us enjoys and we would be sad if it were gone. You don’t have to make the reason why you want to protect the planet complicated.
Figure out what it is you love most about nature and then use that to fuel a more eco-friendly lifestyle. Every step you take makes a difference.
The 1 thing everyone can do to protect the planet is believe that their actions have an impact, for better or worse.
Don’t let the excuse that, “you’re only one person”, keep you from helping our environment.
If you don’t protect the planet, who will?
If you don’t believe you can make a difference, why should anyone else? Our own thoughts and actions are the only thing any of us really has any control over. Therefore, the first step to protecting our planet starts with you believing that your actions can have a positive impact on your local environment and our planet as a whole.
When no one believes that what they do matters, that’s when we all lose.
Don’t wait for your friends and peers to start living a greener life before you do, don’t wait until governments pass new environmental legislation, and please don’t wait until the damage is so widespread that it can’t be ignored.
You’re waiting for everyone else to start, but everyone else is waiting for you. Someone has to go first.
Eco-living starts small and grows
O.K., so you believe you can make a difference and want to start living a more eco-friendly lifestyle, but you don’t know where to start? That’s an easy one. Just start doing something…anything!
Don’t feel like you have to install solar panels all over your house or buy the latest electric car to make a noticeable impact. Start small and make it a habit:
- Stop using plastic straws
- Buy a reusable coffee mug or water bottle
- Reusable grocery bags rather than plastic
- Bike to work
- Pick up 1 piece of trash every day
Regardless of what you choose, it’s going to take some extra thought at first and it might even feel like a chore. Once it becomes a habit though, you’ll notice it’s something you want to do not something you’re forcing yourself to do. From there, you’re eco-friendly habits will start to grow naturally.
Biking to work will turn into biking to the gym or the grocery store, your reusable grocery bags will grow to include canvas produce bags. and picking up 1 piece of trash every day may evolve into a Sunday morning trash cleanup around your favorite park.
Whatever you decide you’re going to start with, be proud of it, because you’re no longer contributing to the problem, instead, you’re a part of the solution.
You’ll influence others to protect the planet too
When you believe you can make a difference, others will believe they can too. People are always watching. You may not know it, heck, they may not even know it, but their watching and what you do will influence their actions.
Maybe they see you pick up a plastic bottle on the side walk and recycle it or they overhear you telling a coworker how great it’s been riding your bike to work. Next thing they know they are picking up trash on the sidewalk instead of walking over it and hoping on their bike to go grab some groceries.
When it comes to eco-living, actions speak louder than words. Doing good things encourages others to do good things as well.
Believing that your actions have an impact on this earth, for better or worse, is the single most important thing you can do to protect the planet. Once you transition to that mindset, everything you do will naturally start to align with that thought. Before you know it, you will be living a more eco-friendly lifestyle.
